Explore the Majestic Hiking Trails of Xinjiang

The vast Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, known for its diverse terrain, offers an array of hiking trails that will captivate any adventure enthusiast.

Discover Tuyugou Valley

Tucked 47 kilometers west of Turpan City, Tuyugou Valley slices through the Flaming Mountains creating a majestic canyon with vivid, colorful rock formations and the lofty peak of these iconic mountains beside it. A tranquil stream flows along the canyon floor, accentuating the grandeur reminiscent of the Grand Canyon's allure.

Adding to the canyon's wonder is the Thousand-Buddha Cave, a Buddhist grotto originating around the Jin Dynasty, echoing ancient spirituality amidst the natural beauty. The nearby Maza Village is noted for its sacred Muslim site, blending cultural richness with outdoor exploration.

  • Hiking route: The path leads from Subashi Village to Maza Village via Gushed Gumuqun and Tuyugou.
  • Optimal hiking season: Late spring through autumn, with the area's fruit harvest offering a natural bounty during this period. Caution is advised during summer's peak temperatures.
  • Difficulty level: Leisurely, perfect for those who relish in outdoor activities.

Ascend Mount Bogda

Bogda Peak reigns as the pinnacle of the Bogda Shan range in the Tian Shan Mountains, visible from Urumqi and soaring to 5,445 meters. Its steep slopes challenge even the most skilled mountaineers. However, non-climbers can still revel in the trails encircling its base.

The journey from Daban to the Bogda Mountaineering Base Camp showcases unforgettable sights like glacial landforms and alpine lakes. The trek can be extended to cross Mt. Tianshan, culminating at the stunning Tian Chi, also known as Heaven's Pool.

  • Best hiking period: June to September offers warmer conditions, though nights at elevation can still be quite cold. Weather is unpredictable, so come prepared for sudden changes.

Nanshan's Varied Landscapes

The accessible Nanshan area serves as Urumqi's premier hiking destination. The southern Tian Shan Mountain hosts an intricate tapestry of gullies and valleys, forests, and sprawling grasslands, home to the historic Kazakh nomads.

Several east-west routes present a range of hiking options, with moderate elevations and clear paths ensuring a beautiful yet manageable experience for day trips or longer excursions.

The Kanas Adventure

Three distinct routes through the Kanas area cater to different skill levels. The eastern route, stretching over 78 kilometers, promises sights like the serene Kanas River and Hemu Village, taking roughly three to four days. The western route, through untouched forests to Double Lake and Kanas Lake, is a bit more challenging and requires four to five days to complete. Lastly, the rigorous trek from Kanas to White Lake is advised only for experienced hikers.

Each path in Kanas unfurls unique vistas of untouched nature, inviting hikers to immerse themselves in the region's splendor.
