Discover the Wonders of Mt. Everest North Base Camp
Unveiling the Majesty of Everest from the North
Resting at an elevation of 5,200 meters within the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve, the North Everest Base Camp in Tibet is the dream destination for those looking to gaze upon the world's highest peak, Mt. Everest, from an intimate distance.
Highlights and Travel Advice
At the North Base Camp, visitors find a modest tented settlement offering essential amenities, dining, and the chance to pick up unique keepsakes. Notably, the site hosts the world's highest post office, where one can send postcards with special stamps as mementos of their high-altitude experience. The base camp operates two common restrooms for travelers' convenience.
Access to the base camp is direct, rewarding visitors with a remarkable view of Mt. Everest. For an even grander vista, a shuttle or a 4-kilometer trek leads to a premium lookout spot, beyond which lies the climbers' base camp, restricted to those with climbing credentials.
The sight of Everest is often shrouded in clouds, making clear days a prize for sightseers. April, May, September, and October are the best months for clearer skies. Overnight stays amplify chances to witness Everest's famous golden sunrise or sunset and the mesmerizing stars at night.
Those visiting should be mindful of altitude sickness and its symptoms like headaches and breathlessness. It's vital to consult healthcare professionals, consider medication, and maintain a gentle pace during activities.
Visiting Hours and Fees
Access to the camp is available throughout the day. Entrance fees are 180 RMB per person and need to prepare 400 RMB for vehicle entry. Usually, explorers spend 1 to 2 days to fully engage in the experience.
Getting There
Travelers must book a tour or organize a private car to the base camp. Those coming from Lhasa typically break the journey in Shigatse or Tingri before progressing to the base camp. Journeying from Tingri or Shigatse to the adjacent Rongbuk Monastery requires around 3 or 7 hours respectively. Consider staying in Tingri for a day-trip to Mt. Everest to maximize your time.
Current Update
As of December 5th, 2018, the Tibet-side North Everest Base Camp has been closed to tourists to protect the environment. Visitors may now only travel as far as the Rongbuk Monastery, which still offers an impressive view of Mt. Everest.
