Han Yangling Mausoleum
The Han Yangling Mausoleum, also known as the Han Yangling Museum, is situated roughly 20 kilometers north of Xi'an's bustling center. This museum was once the burial site for Emperor Jing, the fourth ruler of the Western Han Dynasty, and his consort, Empress Wang.
Spanning an impressive 20 square kilometers, the mausoleum complex includes tombs for royalty, accompanying burial pits, a ceremonial area, and additional graveyards designated for servants and criminals. Presently, with excavations partially complete, several museum halls exhibit the unearthed treasures and provide insightful views into the pits.
Highlights and Travel Tips
Among the vast historical precincts, the Protection Hall is a major attraction, showcasing the excavated burial pits within China's premiere underground museum. Transparent walls and in certain sections, glass flooring, offer visitors a close view of the artifacts while ensuring their preservation.
The museum reveals a plethora of artifacts including miniature human figures, once complete with wooden limbs and textiles, alongside animals, household items, chariots, and armaments. While smaller in scale compared to the Terracotta Warriors, these artifacts provide a richer glimpse into the life of ancient civilians.
The Han Yangling's more secluded nature allows for a tranquil exploration, far from the bustle found at other popular historical sites. Exhibit lighting is meticulously regulated to protect the antiques, and photography is permitted only without flash. Informational signage is available in both English and Chinese.
An informative mini-documentary that expounds on the mausoleum's storied past is available near the museum exit, and while primarily in Chinese, translations can be accessed for English, French, and German speakers at a minimal fee.
