Exploring the Historical Qiao Family Compound
The Qiao Family Compound, also known as Qiao's Grand Courtyard, is an exquisite site of cultural heritage situated just an hour's journey from the ancient city of Pingyao. This well-preserved complex spans 9,000 square meters, featuring 313 rooms that are distributed across six spacious courtyards and 19 smaller ones.
Highlights and Travel Tips
Originally the home of the affluent Qiao Zhiyong, a prominent financier of his time, the Qiao Family Compound's construction commenced in 1756 under the rule of the Qianlong Emperor. Final touches were added in the 18th century; however, the family's prosperity waned during the turmoil of the Second World War.
Today, visitors can immerse themselves in history as the compound now operates as a museum showcasing many authentic furnishings dating back to its heyday. The site gained additional fame as the backdrop for the internationally acclaimed film “Raise the Red Lantern” by director Zhang Yimou, featuring actress Gong Li.
Opening Hours and Ticket Prices
Visitors can explore the compound from 8:30am to 5:30pm. The entrance fee is set at 135 RMB. Guests typically spend around 2 hours marveling at the opulence and architectural marvels of the compound.
