Big Wild Goose Pagoda

Renowned for its historical significance and spiritual aura, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda stands as a testament to the rich Buddhist traditions in Xi'an, China. Constructed over a thousand years ago, this iconic edifice is celebrated for its well-preserved structure despite its age, complete with a characteristic tilt.

Highlights and Travel Insights

The Big Wild Goose Pagoda has evolved through times. Initially erected in 652 CE standing at 53 meters, the landmark bore witness to the works of the Tang dynasty monk Xuan Zang. After suffering collapse, Empress Wu Zetian ordered reconstruction in 704 CE, reaching today's height of 64 meters across seven stories. Many opt for an exterior appreciation of the site, but brave visitors can climb the interior stairs for an unparalleled view of the city, albeit via a steep ascent.

The pagoda is nestled within Da Ci'en Temple, a bustling hub of Buddhist activity and the most revered site in Xi'an. Visitors can roam its corridors, admire the intricate artwork, and observe the devout in prayer. The temple grounds also offer a sizeable gift shop featuring souvenirs and culture-rich calligraphy demonstrations.

A park and square encircle the pagoda, creating a serene ambiance for a leisurely stroll. With sculptures dotting the landscape, these spaces tell their own stories. From June to October, a choreographed water show dazzles, making evenings especially magical as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and its environs glow under illuminative grace. Check with locals for showtimes to enhance your visit.

Opening Hours and Ticket Information

The site opens from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Admission costs include 50 CNY for Da Ci'en Temple and the pagoda exterior, with an additional charge of 30 CNY for those wishing to ascend the pagoda. Allocate approximately 1 hour for this enriching experience.

How to Reach the Big Wild Goose Pagoda

Positioned just beyond the historic city walls, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda is accessible from downtown Xi'an. Public transport options include subway line 3, multiple bus routes, or a quick taxi ride.
